Council was recently approached by TransGrid, a State Government corporation responsible for delivering electricity from power stations to distributors such as Energy Australia and Integral Energy, seeking a site in the Hyland Road Regional Park area for a new electricity substation.
The new substation is a critical component in the essential infrastructure planned by the State Government to cater for the growing electricity demand in Western Sydney.
TransGrid identified the site as being the optimal location for the new substation and advised that it wished to work with Council in determining the terms of a compulsory acquisition agreement.
The site is located in the south western corner of Hyland Road Regional Park in an area currently occupied by pigeon club and rifle range facilities.
“Once TransGrid advised that it would be compulsorily acquiring the site, with agreed terms, due to its significance for the ongoing future supply of electricity to the Sydney metropolitan area, Council sought immediately to negotiate the terms of the acquisition that provided the most benefit possible for the residents of Holroyd”, said Holroyd Council’s Mayor Clr Dr John Brodie.
“Council was pleased that TransGrid, true to their word to work with Council and its community, agreed to Council’s claim for the funding of the relocation of the existing pigeon and rifle club facilities and for the substation to be designed with architectural qualities that are contemporary and in tune with the surrounding area.”
Clr Brodie commented “Whilst Council would not have been able to prevent the acquisition from proceeding Council is pleased at the outcome which provides a significant financial windfall to the residents of Holroyd and congratulate the Council Officers who have assisted in the negotiation of the contract”.
“The agreement signed between Council and TransGrid provides for $12.5 million in compensation for the site which can be put towards the many significant infrastructure needs that exist in a dynamic city such as Holroyd.”
