Holroyd City Council recently donated $5,000 to local Olympian and Commonwealth
champion, Dani Samuels, to assist with the expenses of competing in the 2012 London
Olympics.
Dani’s career started at Greystanes Little Athletics and in 2009 became the youngest
ever female world champion discus thrower.
‘Her hard work and determination is inspirational and Council is extremely proud of Dani
and her achievements,’ said Holroyd City Mayor Clr Yvette Whitfield. ‘Council has
assisted Dani in the past with sporting grants through the Youth Support Program and
is thrilled to continue the support by contributing to her 2012 Olympic voyage.’
After winning the discus gold and shot put bronze medals at the 2005 World Youth
Championships in Athletics, Dani went on to win the bronze medal in the discus at the
2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne at the age of seventeen.
She won the discus silver at the 2007 Summer Universiade and represented Australia
at her first World Championships in athletics soon after. Dani reached the final of the
2008 Beijing Olympics and improved significantly the following year to win the gold
medal at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics.
For many years now, Dani has been actively involved in the Holroyd Community. Her
latest role is the ambassador for the Healthy Holroyd Project, a Healthy Communities
Project funded by the Federal Government.
