Holroyd Council can do!

Holroyd Workplace Tragedy Dedication

14 April 2011

Holroyd City Council will commemorate the International Day of Mourning for Workers Killed at Work with a special dedication service on Saturday 30 April.

“Workplace tragedies have impacted on many people in the Holroyd local government area and this is our way to pay tribute to those who have died simply trying to do their jobs,” said Holroyd Mayor Clr Peter Monaghan.

“Councillors and invited guests will gather at our Workplace Tragedy Memorial Plaque at the former Goodlet and Smith brick pit site in Merrylands for this special ceremony.

“The memorial site provides a dignified place for families to remember their loved ones who have been injured or tragically killed at work, and those who have died from exposure to chemicals and asbestos.

“We are particularly aware of the impact that asbestos related diseases have had in our community and Council continues to advocate for safer disposal of asbestos.

“The International Day of Mourning for Workers Killed at Work is an opportunity for Council to again send a clear message to employers that the community will not tolerate unsafe working conditions.

“An as employer, Holroyd City Council, is committed to providing a safe workplace for all our employees in order to prevent injury and loss of life.

“We encourage other local employers to follow suit and ensure that their workers can return home safely each and every night to their families.

“Council will be joined by representatives of the Workplace Tragedy Family Support Group on Saturday 30 April for this dedication,” Clr Monaghan said.
