More than fifty guests gathered in Holroyd Council’s foyer last night to embark on Holroyd’s new
healthy expedition. The Federal Government has made an investment into Holroyd’s health by
funding a Healthy Communities Project which was officially launched last night as Eat, Play &
Live Well, the Healthy Holroyd project.
‘This project will promote free or low cost activities to residents, which is sure to increase the
awareness of healthier ways to eat, play and live in Holroyd City,‘ said Holroyd City Mayor, Clr
Yvette Whitfield.
The launch event outlined some of the regular activities Council has scheduled until June 2013,
such as free or low cost exercise programs including Heartmoves, Heart Foundation Walking
groups, Lift for Life, and AustCycle. There are many other options for healthy activities to be a
part of in the coming months on top of this regular schedule.
‘The Healthy Holroyd project is sure to encourage the community to Eat, Play, Live Well but also
to educate residents that being healthy is more than just not being sick,’ said Mayor Clr
Whitfield.
All participating organisations had information stalls lining the foyer, offering information and
advice on their healthy programs. There was a special appearance by the King of Vegetables
and Queen of Fruit who bestowed the order of the zucchini whilst guests enjoyed an array of
healthy canapés.
‘The aim of the project is to address the risk factors relating to chronic weight related diseases,’
said Mayor Clr Whitfield, ‘Council is fortunate to have this funding and be able to offer these
activities and programs. We hope that all sectors of the community including local businesses
and community organisations, come on board to work with us to make a real and significant
impact on the lives of our residents.’
Dani Samuels, Olympian & Commonwealth Games champion, was officially announced as the
Face of the Healthy Holroyd Project and gave a moving speech about her successful sporting
career and future goals. Dani is the ideal Healthy Holroyd Ambassador as she has eaten, played
and lived well in Holroyd City since she was a young girl.
