Holroyd Council can do!

A place of quiet reflection

7 May 2009

The newly unveiled Workplace Tragedy Memorial Plaque at the former Goodlet and Smith Brick pit site on Brickworks Drive, Merrylands will provide a dignified place for families to go to remember their loved ones who have been injured or tragically killed at work, and those who have died from exposure to chemicals and asbestos.

At the recent unveiling ceremony Holroyd City Mayor, Clr Greg Cummings said, Similarly to other NSW Councils, Holroyd supported the request to establish a memorial site because we support those who have been affected by these horrific incidents and we need to send a clear message to employers that we will not tolerate unsafe working conditions.

Cheryl Romer, Convener of the Workplace Tragedy Family Support Group who joined the Mayor in unveiling the plaque last weekend said,We believe our personal experiences can help those families who find themselves in the position of losing a loved one through a workplace accident. We also aim to use our own stories to make an active contribution to workplace safety. We use our stories with the belief it is only by humanising these statistics behind workplace accidents that we can bring about a cultural change to work place safety.

The Workplace Tragedy Family Support Group was established to support those families affected by workplace tragedy and to assist through the aftermath. They also act as a lobby group for improvements in workplace safety. For contact information please see: www.workplacetragedy.com/contacts.htm.

Clr Cummings said, I encourage all work places to find better, safer ways of doing things to prevent injury and loss of life.

Those who have been affected are encouraged to meet again at the Memorial each year on 28 April which is International Day of Mourning for Workers Killed at Work.
