Holroyd City Council

Cycleways

Cycleways and bikepaths provide communities with safe places to ride. Please see our map of bike paths to see all the places in Holroyd you can ride and the map of planned bike paths.

Holroyd has cycleways in the following areas:

Further information on bicycle initiatives may be obtained from the Traffic Engineer on 9840 9880.

A cyclist has the same rights and responsibilities as drivers and motorcycle riders under NSW law.

Cyclists must wear an approved bicycle helmet while cycling in NSW. Approved helmets are marked with an Australian Standard Approved Notification (either red or black).

A helmet, when fitted correctly, can reduce the risk of head/brain injury by up to 85%. A helmet that's not worn correctly does not provide enough protection.

Cycling offers a wide range of physical and social health benefits and it enhances the liveability and social health of communities. It is an economically efficient, carbon neutral activity that provides an alternative to motorised transport and therefore presents an effective method of reducing transport-related greenhouse gas emissions.

The Holroyd Cycle Network

The Holroyd Cycle Network is being designed to create a safe, effective and enjoyable environment for cyclists in the Holroyd LGA as a form of transport and recreation.

It will allow cyclists to access all areas of Holroyd including places of employment, entertainment, retail, residential and recreation.

The Holroyd Cycle Network is a road safety strategy that identifies and develops existing and future bicycle routes and consists of the development, construction, implementation of a bicycle network for the Holroyd. The plan includes development of new routes as well as an audit of existing bicycle routes within Holroyd to determine repairs, enhancement and improvement of facilities.

It will provide economic benefits through a more productive workforce and the direct employment of local contractors to undertake planning, construction and enhancement works.

Bicycle Safety

Holroyd Council provides a road safety training track at the Holroyd Gardens, on the corner of Pitt and Walpole Streets, Merrylands.

There is a free bicycle safety computer game for children called Head Over Wheels

Bicycles are vehicles by law under the Australian Road Rules, with equal rights to share the road, and an equal responsibility to obey traffic laws.

All cyclists must wear a helmet in a public place, including roads, pathways and parks.

Young cyclists under the age of 12 years may ride on the footpath as well as the adult accompanying them. Children between 12 and 18 can ride on the footpath if with an adult over 18 and a child under 12. All cyclists riding on the footpath must give way to pedestrians. Council does have the right to prohibit all cyclists from certain areas, including those cyclists under 12 years of age.

A bicycle training program for children and their parents/carers is available free of charge from the Road Safety Officer by emailing web2@holroyd.nsw.gov.au.
