Fairfield was probably first seen by Europeans when Watkin Tench, officer of marines and a keen explorer, climbed Prospect Hill.
On 8 August 1807 Gabriel Louis Marie Huon de Kerrileau received a grant of 100 acres in the centre of present day Fairfield which he called Castel Paul. In 1840 Captain John Horsley bought Castel Paul and renamed the property Fairfield after the family estate in Somerset.
