Holroyd Council can do!

Holroyd Youth Achievement Award, Young Citizen of the Year, Young Ambassadors & Faces of Holroyd

The inaugural Youth Achievement Award was presented by Australia Day Ambassador, Fiona Coote, at Ringrose Park, Wentworthville, during the Holroyd Youth Tattoo celebrations on Australia Day 1991.

The Youth Achievement Award was designed to promote a young achiever who may not have necessarily excelled academically or in a sporting capacity, but who worked as a silent achiever within the Holroyd community. Like the Citizen of the Year Award, recipients were presented with their award during the following years Australia Day celebrations.

The Youth Achievement Award had sought one overall winner, with two recipients, presented with their awards in 1991 and 1992. Council's Salute to Youth committee, reviewed the limitations of such a system, expanded the concept, and renamed the award Young Ambassadors. The 1992 Young Ambassadors included five categories of Sport; Academic achievement; Community services; and two Arts categories of Visual and Performing art.

Over the years, the Award categories have expanded to include Human rights and Environment, with a Special Bravery Award presented in 1996/7. Not every category has a recipient, while some categories have had joint recipients, depending on the nominations each year.

In 2001, Council proposed that in addition to choosing individuals as Young Ambassadors for each of the categories, they would accept all the nominees submitted as the Faces of Holroyd. Council suggested that the Holroyd Motto Holroyd Built around People would be further enhanced by the initiative, inviting the Faces of Holroyd to actively participate in local events throughout the year, giving them more public exposure and fulfilling community expectations of council working in partnership with the community. The Faces of Holroyd were first presented in 2002.

For the 2010 Citizen awards Holroyd City Council introduced a new category of Young Citizen of the Year to recognise the dedication and commitment of young people in Holroyd. Council asked residents to nominate young members of the community who had given up so much of their time to help others for the benefit of the Holroyd community. The inaugural Young Citizen of the Year award was presented on Australia Day 2011.

You can nominate someone for an award, see the Citizens of the Year, or contact Councils Local Studies Librarian on (02) 9840 9789 or e-mail stephen.coppins@holroyd.nsw.gov.au for more information on recipients of the Youth Achievement Award and Young Ambassador.
