NAIDOC

The National Aboriginal and Islander Day of Celebration (NAIDOC) is celebrated annually in July at Central Gardens, Merrylands. This is a time for the wider community and indigenous people to celebrate the survival of indigenous and artistic expression while recognising the contribution of Aboriginal and Islander people to the development of modern Australia.

Local Government Week

Held in early August each year, Local Government Week focuses on Council and its activities. The purpose of the week is to educate residents about the role of local government and the influence a council has in the development of a community. It is an ideal opportunity for residents to find out about the many great facilities and services available to them.

Annual Garden Awards

Holroyd City Council encourages all gardeners to participate in the Annual Garden Awards in September each year, irrespective of their specific gardening interests.

The best gardens in nine different categories receive recognition. Prizes are awarded to the overall Grand Champion and to the overall Eco-Champion, for the effective use of environment-friendly gardening techniques such as companion planting, composting and water efficiency.

The Garden Awards encourage local residents to take pride in their local environment. This is an opportunity for locals to display their creativity and landscape talents to the rest of Holroyd.

The categories include: New Garden, Open Garden, Native Garden, Commercial/Industrial, Small Garden, School, Senior Citizens Garden and Community Grounds.

Gift of Time/Volunteers' Luncheon

In November each year, Holroyd City Council says "thank you" to the members of our community who regularly give up their time to serve the needs of others. The Volunteers' Luncheon is held at the Holroyd Centre in Miller Street Merrylands and is by invitation only.

Volunteers participate in the symbolic 'Gift of Time' ceremony on the day by placing a card on the Christmas Tree indicating the number of hours they have donated to the people of Holroyd.
