Holroyd City Council

Commemoration of the Bicentenary of the First Reconciliation

The first reconciliation between Aboriginal people and European settlers took place on Prospect Hill on Friday 3 May 1805. This conference was a landmark in Aboriginal European relations and led to the cessation of hostilities in the Holroyd/Parramatta area.

Council's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Consultative Committee recommended that the bicentenary of the event be commemorated.

Following consultations with the local Darug people and Elders, a large bluestone rock was quarried from Prospect Hill and relocated in the Gipps Road Sporting Complex in Greystanes in May 2005. A bronze plaque was attached to the rock noting the event. A Warali Wali-possum is cast in the plaque. The design was crafted by Jamie Eastwood, well known Aboriginal artist and resident of Western Sydney.

The rock is sited off the cycleway approximately 500 metres north west of the Aussie Rules football oval in the Gipps Road Sporting Complex in Greystanes and will be moved to Prospect Hill at a future date.
