Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Consultative Committee

Council established an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Consultative Committee (ATSICC) in 1997. This Committee meets quarterly and makes recommendations to council on issues affecting the local indigenous community. You can read the committee's terms of reference and guidelines.

Council is committed to promoting positive images of Aboriginal people and considers the Committee's recommendations with great respect. Some of the achievements of the Committee resulted in the hanging of Aboriginal paintings in Council's foyer and the adoption and display of the Australian Local Government Association Statement of Agreement in the Council foyer.

The Central Library in Merrylands holds an Aboriginal Collection. Council has an Aboriginal Employment Strategy and is represented on the Families First Aboriginal Child, Youth and Family Strategy Steering Committee.

Council also funds a member of the Committee to attend the NSW Local Government Aboriginal Network Conference annually. Councillor Mal Tulloch is currently a member of the Management Committee of the Network. Details of Council's consultations with the local Aboriginal community are in the Social Plan.
