Social Networking and Blogs

Making new friends and meeting them online is fun and the reason why young people create profiles and use social networking sites. A ‘blog’ or virtual diary gives people the opportunity to share their views and can be updated as often as they like.

Although each networking site has its own conditions of use and member rules, there are still dangers associated with posting your profile or publishing your blog online.

  • Posting personal information or photos could put you at risk. Remember, not everyone who sees a profile or blog will be someone the same age or a genuine friend.
  • Blogs can be read by anyone and can be used with the intention to bully or harass someone.

It is important to remember to treat new online friends cautiously and to be careful with what you post about yourself or others. To help keep you safe, download a copy of My Internet Safety Promise  and keep it next to your computer.
