Going Out
Public Transport
There are a number of ways in which seniors can help themselves have a safer ride on public transport. It is important to plan your trip beforehand and to let people know where you are travelling to and what time you expect to be home.
Some tips for travelling safely on buses and trains are:
- Stand back from the edge of the kerb or platform.
- Don’t run into traffic when you see the bus arrive or run on the platform.
- On the bus, take the first available seat.
- On the train, sit near the guard.
- Avoid changing seats while the bus or train is moving.
- Try not to load yourself with too many bags.
- Alert the guard or bus driver if you need assistance.
For information on how seniors can travel safely on Sydney Buses, download a fact sheet from their website at Sydney Buses.
Personal Alarms
Personal alarms are an easy, inexpensive and effective way to alert people that you are in danger. These small devices are battery operated and let off a high pitched alarm when activated by the user.
The Holroyd Local Area Command run safety programs for seniors which include:
- Seniors Safety Talks
- Personal Alarm Giveaways
- Next of Kin register
- Wanderers Register
For more information, contact the Crime Prevention Officer of the Holroyd Local Area Command on 9897 4850.
Motorised Scooters
Motorised scooters and wheelchairs are becoming increasingly popular amongst older persons and people with a disability because they increase mobility and independence.
Under Australian Road Rules, scooters are classed as pedestrian and therefore have the equal rights and responsibilities as a pedestrian. This includes only using a footpath, unless there is no footpath or the footpath is damaged. Scooters do not have the right of way from other pedestrians.
- Be aware of your speed and that other pedestrians, including small children may be around.
- Ensure your scooter has safety features like flags, mirrors, lights, horns and reflectors.
- Make sure the scooter fits your needs. Get advice from an occupational therapist or from the Independent Living Centre. Contact them for a fact sheet on 1300 885 886 or visit Independent Living Centre

Falls

Some tips for preventing falls are:
- Wear flat, non-slip shoes.
- Have your eyesight checked regularly.
- Participate in moderate exercise to help maintain balance and walking ability.
- Manage your medicines.
- Manage any chronic health problems.
- Modify your home.
- Watch out for any trip hazards inside your home and in public places.
