Going Out
Public Transport
Public transport is reliable and safe. There are times though when we feel unsafe such as when travelling alone or at night. Being aware of your surroundings and using common sense will help you to feel safer when travelling on trains and buses.
Some tips for using public transport are:
- Wait for a bus or train near other people or under a light.
- Sit on a bus or train near other people, in a safety marked carriage, near the bus driver or with your back protected.
You will also need to consider getting to and from the bus stop or train station. If you park your car near the station or bus stop, park in a spot you will feel safe walking to. If walking home, walk with or near other people. If possible, have someone escort you home from the bus stop or train station.
If you feel unsafe or are being harassed, tell the driver or guard, move seats or use a loud voice to alert other passengers or guards.

Out in Public
Personal safety is not just about travelling alone or going out at night. It means being aware of our surroundings and being aware of our personal belongings in both the day and night. Taking simple precautions when going out can reduce the chances of something happening.
Some tips for being out in public are:
- Always keep your bag with you. Never leave it within easy reach of others.
- When using an ATM, keep your pin hidden and put your cash away before leaving.
- Walk confidently and stay alert of your surroundings.
- Stick to well lit and busy streets. Avoid secluded shortcuts.
- Carry a personal alarm.
- Have your car keys ready before approaching your car.
- Drive to a police station if you feel threatened.
Bag Snatch
Bag snatching is an opportunistic crime where thieves look for easy targets.
It takes the victim by surprise and can easily result in injury, as the victim is pushed while the bag is pulled at the same time.
Some tips to prevent bag snatching are:
- Keep money and valuables in your bag to a minimum.
- Carry the bag close to your body.
- Carry a handbag with short straps in your hand, with your arm through the straps.
- Keep the opening of the bag toward you and keep it zipped up.
- Use a backpack for any shopping and leave your hands for your handbag.
