Definition of Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is when one person in a family or relationship abuses another. It can occur between parent and child, husband and wife, boyfriend and girlfriend and even ex-partners. Domestic violence occurs in families from any background, age group or culture. The types of abuse includes abuse includes physical assault, sexual assault, financial abuse, social abuse and psychological abuse.

  • Physical abuse includes punching, hitting, slapping, shoving, kicking, choking and using a weapon. Physical assault is a criminal offence.
  • Sexual assault includes forcing someone to have sex or unwanted touching or forcing someone to watch pornography.
  • Financial abuse includes denying someone their money, not giving someone money for things they need to buy, keeping all of the money and making someone account for money spent.
  • Social abuse includes not allowing someone to go out, to go shopping, to visit family or friends and always checking up on them.
  • Psychological abuse includes verbally threatening someone, calling them names to make them feel bad about themselves or to make them feel worthless or ashamed.

Domestic violence is a crime. It can result in a number of injuries and health problems including psychological. It also has a serious affect on children. They can assist you with an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO) and accessing other services.
