What Else Can You Do?
Monitoring Systems
Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) is a good deterrent to offenders. It can also identify offenders when recording a crime in progress.
There are many CCTV systems available for hire or purchase. They vary in cost depending on the features, so are now more affordable. Some features include, alarms, zoom, tilt and pan, low light operation and infra red camera.
Identifying Suspicious Behaviour
Be alert for strangers. Is there anyone:
- Lurking about outside?
- Asking questions about your business?
- Spending time inside without buying anything?
- Dressed inappropriately for the weather, like winter clothes on a hot day?
Report any suspicious activity to the local police. If there is a crime in progress, call ‘000’. To report an incident that is not an emergency, call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.
Safer By Design
Offenders look for opportunities not to get caught. Changing the environment, design or layout of a business can greatly reduce crime. This includes simple measures like keeping windows clear of advertising material to increase natural surveillance and controlling access as well as planning for safer cities.
Visit the NSW Police website at NSW Police for information on reducing crime by looking Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED).
