Membership & Borrowing

Joining

Membership is free except for the Toy Library where annual membership charges apply. Simply come to any branch, fill out a membership form and show us proof of your name and current address. If you are under 18 years of age, your parent or legal guardian must sign your membership form.

You must live in the metropolitan area of Sydney and surrounding areas (Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Newcastle and Wollongong) and show current New South Wales identification.

A library card will be issued to you as soon as you have presented current identification. You may begin borrowing immediately.

Report a lost or stolen library card immediately, as you are responsible for all items issued to your card. A minimal charge for a replacement card applies.

Please notify the library of any changes of address or name.

Borrowing

You need your library card with you whenever you wish to borrow.

Library items (excluding toys, videos, HSC lending material and DVDs) may be borrowed for four weeks. Toys, DVDs and videos are available for loan for 2 weeks. HSC lending material can be borrowed for 7 days.

Maximum number of items that can be borrowed at a time:

  • 4 non-fiction books if for a school project
  • 10 magazines
  • 20 CDs (5 non-English language CDs)
  • 5 non-English language books ordered from the State Library
  • 10 pieces of sheet music
  • Toys and party packs
  • 20 CD-ROM titles per family
  • 10 DVDs (5 non-English language DVDs)
  • 5 HSC lending titles
You can borrow as many non-fiction, fiction, picture books, talking books, basic English resources and non-English resources as you like.

Finding Items

You can search the online catalogue at home and at all libraries.

All library items that are currently on loan, with the exception of toys, may be reserved at no charge.

Requests can be made for items to be transferred from one branch to another or kept at another branch for you to collect at no charge.

Items not held by Holroyd City Council Library Service can be requested through the Inter-Library Loans system.

Returning

Library items, including toys, can be returned to any one of our three libraries.

To avoid fines return items on or before the due date.

You can ask for a renewal on or before the due date in person or over the phone on 9840 9960. Items can be renewed once if they are not overdue or reserved for another person.

Overdue fines are charged for late returns of library materials. A first notice is sent when items are one week overdue. A second and final notice is sent two weeks later.
