When the Holroyd City Council Library Service officially opened on 4 March 1991 there were no public computers, Internet access, DVDs, databases or CDs and e-Books weren’t even dreamed of. You used a card catalogue instead of an online catalogue, and when you borrowed books, the due date was stamped inside the front cover.
The Toy Library was not incorporated into the main Library Service until 1997, and found its permanent home at Wentworthville Branch Library in 1998. The following year, the new purpose-built Merrylands Central Library was officially opened on 21 August.
Holroyd City Council Library Service’s story is one of rapid growth and constant change to meet the needs of the modern high tech world, but bibliophiles will be pleased to know that you can still find a good book at any of its three branches!
