The Workplace Tragedy Memorial Plaque located at the former Goodlet and Smith Brick pit site on Brickworks Drive, Merrylands provides a dignified place for families to go to remember their loved ones who have been injured or tragically killed at work, and those who have died from exposure to chemicals and asbestos.
In 2009 the memorial plaque was dedicated and unveiled by Holroyd City Mayor, Clr Greg Cummings and he commented that ‘Holroyd supported the request to establish a memorial site because we support those who have been affected by these horrific incidents and we need to send a clear message to employers that we will not tolerate unsafe working conditions.’
The Workplace Tragedy Family Support Group believe their personal experiences can help those families who find themselves in the position of losing a loved one through a workplace accident. They also aim to use their own stories to make an active contribution to workplace safety. They use their stories with the belief it is only by humanising these statistics behind workplace accidents that they can bring about a cultural change to work place safety.
The Workplace Tragedy Family Support Group was established to support those families affected by workplace tragedy and to assist through the aftermath. They also act as a lobby group for improvements in workplace safety. Contact Details
Council encourages all work places to find better, safer ways of doing things to prevent injury and loss of life.
Those who have been affected are encouraged to meet again at the Memorial each year on 28 April which is International Day of Mourning for Workers Killed at Work.
The wall of memory which in 2011 was unveiled has name plaques of workers who have been injured or tragically killed at work, and those who have died from exposure to chemicals and asbestos.
If you would like to have your family members’ name placed on this wall please contact the Workplace Tragedy Family Support Group.
