Holroyd City Council

Disposal of Household Chemicals

The NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water provide weekend drop-off centres for old and leftover chemicals. There is one held in the Holroyd area every year, however they are held all over Sydney and residents are able to attend any that are convenient to them.

Materials that will be accepted include:

  • Paints and paint related products (thinners, strippers, varnish etc.)
  • Pesticides & herbicides (fungicides, baits/poisons, wood preservatives)
  • Solvents and household cleaners
  • Motor oils and fuels
  • Batteries
  • Gas bottles
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Flares
  • Pool chemicals
  • Acids & alkalis
  • Hobby chemicals (such as photography chemicals)

Please remember that only household quantities are accepted. This service is not for commercial operators.

Storing and transporting your chemicals carefully:

  • Never mix chemicals as this may produce dangerous reactions. Try to keep all chemicals in their original containers.
  • Ensure containers are clearly labelled and well sealed. If you do not know what is in the container, label it UNKNOWN CHEMICAL.
  • Liquid can leak during transport. Wrap containers holding liquids securely in newspaper and place them in sturdy plastic bags then pack in plastic buckets or trays.
  • During transport, keep household chemicals away from passengers, eg. in the boot.
