Saving Energy
By reducing the amount of electricity and gas you use in your home, and the amount of fuel you use in your car, you can reduce greenhouse gases and save money at the same time.
Easy tips to save money and energy:
- Use energy efficient light bulbs - they last up to 10 times longer and use 80% less energy
- Turn off lights when you leave a room
- Turn appliances off at the wall when not in use
- Insulate your roof and ceiling and save between 20-40% on heating and cooling costs
- Wear warm clothes instead of turning the heater on in winter
- Use draft excluders (door snakes) and rugs to keep your house warm
- Plant deciduous trees near your home – they provide shade in summer and lose their leaves in autumn, letting in the warm winter sun
- Install a solar hot water system
- Use energy efficient appliances – each appliance has a label with stars; the more stars you see, the more energy efficient the appliance is and the more money you save
- Keep summer heat out by using external blinds to shade windows
- Buy GreenPower (electricity generated from renewable resources).
Most energy in NSW is from coal mined in NSW and petroleum bought from interstate or overseas. The remainder comes from natural gas imported from South Australia and Victoria, hydro-electricity, wood and bagasse (a by-product of the sugar industry).
The production and use of energy has significant environmental impacts and is the main source of greenhouse gas emissions. Increasing greenhouse gas emissions is enhancing the natural greenhouse effect and bringing about changes to the climate. Around the world, climate change (also known as global warming) is acknowledged as one of the most pressing environmental issues.
