Fridge Buyback Scheme

Loading a fridge onto a truck as part of the buy-back schemeFridge Buyback is a residential energy efficiency program that actually pays you to help save the environment and reduce your electricity bills.

Residents with working second fridges they no longer need can call Fridge Buyback on 1800 708 401 during business hours or visit Fridge Buybacks website to arrange for their fridge to be collected.

Eligible fridges must be the second fridge in the house, they must be switched on and working. They must be 250 litres or more in size and 10 or more years old.

Residents will receive:

  • free fridge collection from their home by experienced removalists if 20 stairs or less are involved in removing the fridge
  • a $35 rebate if 6 stairs or less are involved in removing their fridge and
  • removals involving 21 or more stairs will not involve a payment and will incur a fee which will be negotiated directly with the removalists prior to collection.
Old, inefficient second fridges use large amounts of power; adding on average more than $210 to an annual electricity bill and creating around 1 tonne a year of greenhouse gases.

The program aims to remove 19,000 working second fridges from homes in metropolitan Sydney. Residents participating in Fridge Buyback will avoid over $24 million in electricity bills and help reduce over 150,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions over the next three years.

Fridge Buyback is an energy efficiency program supported by the NSW Government's Climate Change Fund.
