Pet Registration

By the time your dog or cat is 6 months old it must be registered with a local council in NSW. Registration involves a one-off payment that covers the animal for life.

Registration is different to microchipping, however it can only be done once the animal is microchipped.

How much is the registration fee and what is required?

Below is a list of the current registration fees and the requirements. Please note that the fee is a “one-off” payment which covers your pet for life.

  • Current membership card from Dogs NSW, NSW Cat Fanciers Association or Waratah State Cat Alliance
  • Certificate of pedigree
  • Signed statement by owner that the animal is to be kept for breeding purposes

How do I register my pet?

You can bring the fee and the appropriate documents to Council's Customer Service Centre at 16 Memorial Avenue, Merrylands between 8am and 4.30pm weekdays to register.

If you can't come in person you can post a cheque or money order for the fee along with a copy of your documents to:

Why do I need to register my pet?

The simple explanation for why you have to register your animal is because it’s the law! The Companion Animals Act 1998 provides for an on the spot penalty of $165 for failure to register your pet by 6 months of age.
