By the time your dog or cat is 6 months old it must be registered with a local council in NSW. Registration involves a one-off payment that covers the animal for life.
Registration is different to microchipping, however it can only be done once the animal is microchipped.

You can bring the fee and the appropriate documents to Council's Customer Service Centre at 16 Memorial Avenue, Merrylands between 8am and 4.30pm weekdays to register.

The simple explanation for why you have to register your animal is because it’s the law! The Companion Animals Act 1998 provides for an on the spot penalty of $165 for failure to register your pet by 6 months of age.
