What To Do If You Lose or Find a Pet
Lost Pets
Losing your pet can be a very stressful and emotional time however there are some things that you need to do to improve your chances of being reunited with your pet.
Some of these include:
- Complete Council’s Online Lost Pet Form. The details and photo of your missing pet will be placed on the lost animal list in the hope that a member of the public will recognise your pet and contact you to advise of its whereabouts.
- Visit the Blacktown Animal Holding Facility on a regular basis at 415 Flushcombe Road, Blacktown. This is especially important if your pet is not microchipped. You can also ring them on 9839 6160 or 9839 6161.
- Check with your neighbours
- Check with local vets to see if any stray/injured animals have been handed into them.
- Check the local papers lost and found ads – you can even put an ad in the paper yourself.
- There are many websites established now designed as noticeboards for lost and found animals. Search for these sites and list your pet on them.
For more information about what you can do when your pet goes missing, contact Council on 9840 9840.
Found Pets
If you have found a pet you can do the following:
- Check immediately to see if it has any identification on it.
- Don't let the animal keep wandering on the street; if at all possible confine it so it doesn't cause an accident or become injured.
- Ask around the neighbourhood to see if anyone knows the animal.
- Take the pet to be scanned at the local vets or shelter. If the animal is microchipped this is the best way to find its owners. Ring ahead to make sure the vet has a scanner.
- If you aren't willing to keep the animal any length of time either take the animal to the Blacktown pound or call Council and have the animal picked up.
If you are willing to care for the animal for awhile then here are some further steps:
- List the pet on this website.
- Call the Blacktown Animal Holding Facility and local vets regularly to see if anyone is looking for it.
- Do a letter box drop and put up notices in the local shops.
