How to Apply - Overview

Thank you for your interest in applying for a position with Holroyd City Council. The following information will help you to understand our selection processes and to prepare your application.

Before you apply for a position please read the position description (available immediately following the advertisement) carefully to assess your eligibility and suitability for the position.

What to Include in Your Application

In your application you should include:

Education and Qualifications

List all relevant education undertaken at registered training facilities. Include the name of the institution, dates attended and the qualification achieved eg; degree, certificate etc. Provide copies of any certificates and formal qualifications in your application but be prepared to show the original certificates at interview.

If your qualifications were obtained overseas, include a statement of Australian accreditation if available.

Employment History

List all employment beginning with your current or most recent employer, together with start and finish dates of positions held and a brief summary of responsibilities and achievements.

Further Work Related Activities

Provide details of any other activities which may relate to the position to support your application.

Referees

Provide the names, position titles, addresses and telephone numbers of two referees who can detail information about how you meet the selection criteria. Obtain permission from your referees before you nominate them.

In summary, to apply for a position at Holroyd City Council please ensure you:

As stated previously Council is committed to ensuring a safe and ethical workplace for both our employees and the community. To support this, applicants are required to undergo a number of checks to ensure our recruitment process meets these requirements.

Working With Children Check

In the case of a child-related employment position, a “Working With Children Check” is a prerequisite. You must be registered and supply your clearance number when completing the applicant form.

Work Rights Check

Council checks work rights of all prospective employees for the following reasons:

  • People found working without lawful authority are usually removed from the workplace without notice.
  • Employing illegal workers may cause Council’s reputation to suffer.
  • The Government issues Warning Notices to employers who are found to be employing illegal workers. These Warning Notices may be taken into account in deciding what action will be taken in the future, if the employer is found to have again employed an illegal worker.

To check the work rights of a prospective employee Council needs to establish the employee’s right to reside in Australia and determine the employee’s right to work. If you require further information go to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

If invited to attend an interview you may also be requested to attend (at a later date) a medical assessment (at Councils expense) as part of the selection process. An invitation to attend a medical assessment is not to be perceived as a guarantee of an offer for employment.

Due to the nature of this position you may be required to complete the Declaration of Interest in accordance with Section 441 of the Local Government Act 1993.

Successful applicants will be required to apply to the General Manager for permission to engage in any external employment in addition to Council duties.

Got an Interview? - What to Expect...

If you are successful in gaining an interview you will be informed via email or telephone. Please inform the person arranging the interview if you have any special requirements e.g wheelchair access.

A Selection Panel consisting of at least three people will conduct interviews. The panel will consist of employees from the department/occupation related to the position and at least one independent person either external to Council or from a section unrelated to the vacant position.

The panel will attempt to determine your suitability for the position by asking a combination of technical questions and questions about your experience which relate to the essential and desirable criteria and job tasks listed in the job description.

The interview will follow a structured process and the panel will ask all applicants the same questions. They may follow up or explore particular issues from individual applications. You should attempt to answer all questions and provide as much detail as possible to assist the panel to recommend the most suitable applicant.
