Holroyd Council can do!

Asbestos

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was once used in building construction. If inhaled it can cause lung cancer and other serious illnesses.

There are special conditions of development consent imposed by Holroyd Council for demolition, renovation, recladding or brick veneering buildings erected before 1987 due to the possibility of asbestos. This is to ensure the safety of workers and neighbouring residents. Please read Holroyd's Asbestos Cement Policy for details.

For more information please read the Fibro & Asbestos Guide and visit Think Asbestos.

If you are concerned about how asbestos is being handled contact Council’s Customer Service Unit on 9840 9840.

Council’s Ordinance Inspectors will attend the site to determine if compliance with Council’s Asbestos Policy is occurring. Where Council is the Certifying Authority any non-compliance will result in a direction to stop work and the site will be referred to Council’s Building Services Unit with work not able to recommence until Council is satisfied that Council’s Asbestos Policy is being followed. Failure to comply with Council Asbestos Policy can result in Council taking legal action which may result in the issuing of Penalty Infringement Notice(s) or court imposed fines.

Unfortunately recent NSW Government changes to the NSW Planning system mean that not all Asbestos removal requires Council’s approval. In some circumstances no approval is required at all or approval is given by a Private Certifying Authority who also controls the site whilst works are undertaken. In these circumstances you should contact WorkCover (phone 131050) and the Private Certifier, whose details should be displayed at the site.
