Holroyd Council can do!

'Holroyd's Future' Community Consultation Project

In 2007 Council conducted a comprehensive community consultation project to inform the preparation of its new Local Environmental Plan (LEP) and other city-wide strategies and planning documents that will guide future land use and development in Holroyd City. Council engaged a broad cross-section of the community in this consultation process, and over the course of several months a number of workshops, focus groups and briefing sessions were held to capture people’s thoughts and visions about our City and its future.

The preliminary consultations identified a range of views around future land use and development in Holroyd. The second stage of the process was the Holroyd Speaks forum, held on 10 October 2007, which involved an in-depth exploration of the issues and sought consensus on various options for planning Holroyd’s future.

The outcomes of the forum informed the development of a set of strategic directions to guide the future planning of the City in relation to land use & development, population, transport & accessibility, the urban landscape and the development approval process. These strategic directions include:

  • Transitioned residential development – enabling higher densities around centres with a transitioning to low densities away from centres.
  • A clean, green public domain – ensuring sufficient open space particularly in high density areas, better landscaping in new development and public areas and more effective management of rubbish.
  • Catering to a changing population – ensuring new housing and services meet the needs of older people and people from all cultural backgrounds.
  • Better integration of transport and more pedestrian and bike-friendly neighbourhoods.

The strategic directions are documented in the final report on the outcomes of the Holroyd’s Future consultation process. This report has been used in the preparation of Council’s Residential Development Strategy as well as its new Draft LEP and supporting Development Control Plan, which will guide and control future land use and development throughout the City.
